Manage Money God's Way

There is nothing that comes through our hands that competes for our heart like money. Money is never emotionally neutral. It always reveals what we value and who we trust with our life. We developed this resource center to help you have a vision for healthy stewardship and financial freedom.

“For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also,” Matthew 6:21

Think Like a Steward

Stewardship is the management of the property of another.

It may come as a surprise, but Jesus talked about money more than prayer, fasting, and eternity. Almost half of all the parables Jesus told are connected to money.

Why?

Because God knew we would spend so much of our life thinking about money, talking about money, working for money, and making decisions about money. At the end of the day, there is nothing that comes through our hands that competes for our heart like money. Money is never emotionally neutral. It always reveals what we value and who we trust with our life.

According to Jesus the most important step toward financial freedom is realizing we are not owners as much as we are stewards.  In other words, we are not entitled to receive money, but  entrusted to manage money.

Everything we have in our life including health,  work, relationships, and even money are a gift from God.To move toward financial freedom, we need to think like a steward.

“Remember the LORD your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth…” Deuteronomy 8:18

Give Generously

Unleashing generosity makes an eternal impact across the world, helping more people hear the life-giving message of Jesus.

We serve a generous God who longs for us to live and give generously. We are never closer to the heart of God than when we give.

Jesus said, “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matthew 6:21.)

GROWING OUR FAITH

No matter how we order our lives, if God is not first our life will always be out of order. Perhaps this is one of the reasons God went to so much effort to make sure His people implemented the principle of tithing in the Old and New Testament.

The word tithe means tenth. In the Bible, it was the principle of giving the first ten percent of what God has given to us back to His work through a local family of faith. The God we read about in scripture,  can do more with the first 10 percent of our check than we can with the whole 100 percent. Anything above and beyond a tithe is considered an offering.

God promises when we make Him the number one priority in our life whatever sacrifice is made will be more than filled with His peace, joy and provision.

JOY OF GIVING

When we unleash generosity it shapes our joy, protects our heart, anchors our hope, enlarges our vision, and encourages our faith.

“Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously.  Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.” 2 Corinthians 9:6-7

Save Diligently

Saving is the process of intentionally reserving or investing some of your money for a potential emergency, short term goal or long term dream.

The wisest man who ever lived Solomon reminds us to consider the work ethic and intentional saving mentality of the ant.

“Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise! Though they have no prince or governor or ruler to make them work, they labor hard all summer, gathering food for the winter.” Proverbs 6:6-8

“Dishonest money dwindles away, but whoever gathers money little by little makes it grow.” Proverbs 13:11

Saving money is incredibly important. It provides peace of mind, protection against emergencies, expands opportunities, and sets a strong foundation for financial freedom.

EMERGENCY FUND

If there’s one thing history has demonstrated is that we all need to establish an  emergency fund. Why? Well, because you never know what’s going to come your way.  An emergency fund is simply money you’ve saved and set aside for life’s unexpected events.
If you have consumer debt, we recommend saving $1000 to begin your emergency fund. Then, once you’re out of debt, we encourage you to save four to six months of expenses in a fully funded emergency fund.
The emergency fund needs to be saved in an easy to access account. The best options are as follows.
  • A simple savings account connected to your checking account
  • A money market account that comes with a debit card or check-writing privileges
  • An online bank that pays a higher interest rate and where you can still transfer money quickly and directly to your checking account.
INVESTING

Once you have established a fully funded emergency account, addressed your debt, and identified future goals you will want to consider investing options. We always recommend sitting down with a trusted Christian financial advisor who has the heart of a teacher. The best options for investing toward long term goals are as follows.
  • Company Retirement Options: 401 K, 403b, or 457.
  • Personal Retirement Options: Roth or Traditional IRA.
  • Personal Investing Options: Stock Market, Real Estate, Etc.

Spend Wisely

Our world teaches us to spend first and then keep spending and then spend some more. As a result, we buy things we don’t need, with money we don’t have, to impress people we don’t like. Many of us feel the weight of financial stress because of our overextended debt. The following is a picture of the average American home in 2022 when it comes to debt.

  • 80% of adults in the US have some form of debt.
  • Average credit card debt is $15,000.
  • Average student loan debt is $39,000.
  • Average car payment is $580.
  • Average mortgage debt is over $200,000

Some people say we have a debt crisis in our country, but the truth is we have a spending crisis. The wisest man who ever lived warned against the power of debt in the book of Proverbs.

“The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is slave of the lender.” Proverbs 22:7
If we are going to practice healthy stewardship that leads toward financial freedom we must learn to spend wisely.
PRAY ABOUT FINANCIAL PURCHASES
Since our money is God’s money, every spending decision we make is a spiritual decision. We pray about our relationships, work opportunities,  physical health, but often neglect asking God to help us with our spending choices.
GET OUT OF DEBT AND STAY OUT OF DEBT

Paying off debt is life changing! We recommend paying off debt using a method known as the debt snowball. You can use our Debt Snowball Tool to help you or create your own. The following are four key steps to take when paying off debt.

  • Step 1: List your debts from smallest to largest regardless of interest rate.
  • Step 2: Make minimum payments on all your debts except the smallest.
  • Step 3: Pay as much as possible on your smallest debt.
  • Step 4: Repeat until each debt is paid in full.

DEVELOP A BUDGET

The single greatest tool to help your family spend wisely is a budget. A budget simply allows us to act our wage, direct our money, and plan with purpose. If we are lost financially, more than likely it is because we don’t have a budget. You don’t have to create your own, there are plenty of tools available to help you for free.

Teach The Next Generation

The way we talk about and handle money impacts the next generation in more ways that we realize. This is why it is so important to model healthy stewardship. We must teach the next generation to value what God values.

It is worth observing that Jesus never offered money as an answer to a person’s problem. No one ever approached Jesus with a need and heard Him say, “Do you know what you need? You need more money.”

The next generation is being shaped by our words and our actions for better or for worse. We must lead by example and teach them that although money is good it is not God.Jesus says, “No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money.” Matthew 6:24

The next generation needs to see men and women who boldly follow Jesus, practice healthy stewardship, and live in financial freedom.
